Indian Compliance & Tax

Can I carry forward crypto losses to future years in India?

Under India's current virtual digital asset tax rules, losses from crypto cannot be carried forward to future years. The framework introduced in 2022 disallows carry-forward of VDA losses entirely, unlike many other asset classes. For example, a loss on one crypto sale this year cannot reduce a taxable gain in the next financial year; it simply lapses. This treatment also interacts with rules barring set-off against other income. Tax positions can change and depend on your facts, so confirm with a qualified tax professional before filing.

This is general information, not tax advice. Tax rules change and depend on your individual circumstances — verify the current rules or consult a qualified tax professional before acting.
