What is the ERC-721 token standard?

ERC-721 is a technical standard on the Ethereum blockchain that defines how to create and manage non-fungible tokens, where each token is unique and individually tracked. It specifies a common set of functions, such as transferring a token and checking its owner, so wallets and marketplaces can handle any compliant NFT the same way. For example, most early NFT collections were built on ERC-721, giving each item its own token ID. A related standard, ERC-1155, supports both fungible and non-fungible tokens in one contract.
