What is the lock-in period in an ELSS fund?
The lock-in period in an ELSS (Equity Linked Savings Scheme) fund is the minimum three years you must hold your units before you can redeem them. ELSS is the tax-saving equity mutual fund category in India, and the three-year lock-in is the shortest among comparable tax-saving instruments. For a lump-sum investment, the three years run from the purchase date; for a SIP, each instalment locks in separately from its own date. Lock-in restricts access, not outcome, so factor in when you might actually need the capital before committing it.
