Derivatives & Risk

What is open interest in crypto derivatives?

Open interest is the total number of derivative contracts, such as futures or options, that remain open and unsettled at a given time. It counts active positions rather than trading volume, so it rises when new positions are created and falls when they are closed. For example, if traders open 1,000 new futures contracts and close 200, open interest rises by 800. Analysts read rising open interest alongside price as a sign of money entering the market, though it describes participation, not direction or likely outcome.

Crypto investments are subject to market risk and volatility. Past performance is not indicative of future returns. This is general information, not investment advice — consider your own circumstances or consult a qualified adviser before investing.
