NFTs, DAOs & Web3
Are DAOs legal in India?
India has no specific law that recognizes a DAO as a distinct legal entity, so a decentralized autonomous organization does not have formal corporate standing the way a registered company does. This does not make participation automatically illegal, but it leaves questions about liability, contracts, and taxation unsettled, and members may be treated under existing partnership or association rules. For example, a DAO cannot register itself the way a private limited company can. The underlying tokens fall under the Virtual Digital Asset framework, and the legal picture continues to evolve, so professional guidance is sensible before participating.
