What is a Merkle root and how is it built?
A Merkle root is a single hash that summarizes a whole set of data, such as all transactions in a block, by combining their individual hashes into one fingerprint. It is built from a Merkle tree: each piece of data is hashed, pairs of hashes are hashed together, and the process repeats up the levels until one hash remains at the top. This structure lets you prove a single item belongs to the set without downloading everything, by checking a short path of hashes. For example, Proof of Reserves often uses a Merkle root so each user can confirm their balance is included.
