What is a DAO?

A decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) is a group that coordinates and makes decisions through rules written into blockchain smart contracts rather than through a traditional central management structure. Members typically hold governance tokens that let them propose and vote on changes, with outcomes executed automatically by code. For example, a DAO might vote on how to allocate a shared treasury, and the approved transaction runs without a manager signing off. DAOs aim to distribute control across members, though in practice voting power often concentrates among the largest token holders.
