What is DeFi (decentralized finance)?

DeFi, or decentralized finance, refers to financial services such as lending, borrowing, and trading that run on blockchains through smart contracts rather than through banks or brokers. Code automates the rules, so transactions execute without an intermediary holding your funds, and anyone with a wallet can access them. For example, instead of a bank approving a loan, a DeFi protocol lets you borrow against crypto you deposit, with terms enforced automatically. DeFi removes intermediaries but introduces smart-contract and market risks. Qatobit treats this landscape through research-led, curated indices rather than direct protocol exposure.
