What is NFT metadata?

NFT metadata is the descriptive information attached to a token, such as its name, image link, traits, and attributes, that defines what the NFT represents. The token on-chain usually points to this metadata rather than storing the full content itself. For example, an NFT's record may hold a link to a file describing the artwork and its rarity traits, often stored on decentralized systems like IPFS. Where the metadata lives matters: if it sits on a private server that disappears, the on-chain token can lose the details it points to.
