A 2019 reset, a 2020-2021 cycle that put it within touching distance of Bitcoin in market cap, a 2022 drawdown that broke a lot of confidence, the Merge transition to Proof of Stake in September 2022 that ended the proof-of-work era, the Dencun upgrade in March 2024 that pushed Layer 2 economics into a different shape, the spot Ethereum ETF approval in May 2024 that opened US institutional channels, and the Pectra upgrade in 2025 that introduced account-abstraction features at the protocol level. Through all of it, the price has been on the cycle that has come to define crypto, and the asset has retained its place as the second-largest cryptocurrency by market cap. This piece looks at the performance record for an INR-denominated Ethereum holder, the adoption arc, and the question of whether and how Ethereum belongs in an Indian investor's portfolio in 2026.
Ethereum's INR-denominated rolling returns from 2019 to 2026 have been strongly positive at long-window horizons, with severe interim drawdowns. Why Ethereum requires its own analysis
Ethereum and Bitcoin are often grouped together in retail discussion as "the two big ones", but the analytical case for each is structurally different. Bitcoin's case is straightforward: a digital store of value with a fixed supply schedule, valued as an alternative monetary asset. Ethereum's case is more multi-dimensional: a programmable smart-contract platform where the underlying asset accrues value through transaction-fee burns (since the August 2021 EIP-1559 upgrade) and through its role as the staking and settlement asset for an ecosystem of applications, Layer 2 networks, and tokenised assets.
This distinction matters for performance analysis. Bitcoin's price is largely a function of supply and demand for the digital-store-of-value thesis. Ethereum's price is a function of demand for the platform's blockspace, the velocity of stablecoin and DeFi activity, the volume of Layer 2 settlement, the staking yield environment, and the rate of fee burn. The drivers are different. The correlation with Bitcoin is high in absolute terms (typically 0.7 to 0.9 across rolling windows) but the divergence periods are meaningful and the underlying fundamentals operate on different mechanisms.
For an Indian investor, the analysis also has to account for the INR-denominated experience. The USD-INR exchange rate has weakened from approximately 70 in early 2019 to approximately 85 in 2026. INR returns on USD-priced assets like Ethereum carry the FX tailwind as an additive component. The INR-denominated returns and drawdowns are the relevant series for portfolio analysis from this country.
How Ethereum's protocol changed from 2019 to 2026
The protocol upgrades from 2019 to 2026 changed Ethereum's economics meaningfully, and the changes matter for any forward analysis.
EIP-1559 (August 2021) introduced a fee-burn mechanism. A portion of every transaction fee is burnt rather than paid to validators, which means high network activity creates deflationary pressure on the Ethereum supply. The mechanism turned Ethereum's monetary policy from purely inflationary (proof-of-work issuance to miners) into a function of network activity, with the supply contracting in high-usage periods.
The Merge (September 15, 2022) transitioned Ethereum from Proof of Work to Proof of Stake. Energy consumption fell by approximately 99.95 percent. Issuance to validators replaced issuance to miners, at a structurally lower rate. Combined with EIP-1559, the post-Merge supply trajectory has been close to flat or modestly deflationary in high-activity periods, depending on usage. The mechanism is the single largest change to Ethereum's economics since the genesis block.
Dencun (March 13, 2024) implemented EIP-4844 (proto-danksharding) and several supporting EIPs. The headline change was the introduction of blob transactions: a separate data-availability layer that allowed Layer 2 rollups to post compressed state to Ethereum at a fraction of the previous cost. The result was a step-change reduction in Layer 2 transaction fees, which in turn accelerated user adoption of the major rollups (Arbitrum, Optimism, Base, zkSync, and others). The upgrade shifted Ethereum's role: less of a direct user-facing chain, more of a settlement and data-availability layer for an expanding Layer 2 ecosystem.
Pectra (2025) introduced account-abstraction features at the protocol level through EIP-7702, alongside changes to validator economics through EIP-7251 (raising the maximum effective balance) and other supporting EIPs. Account abstraction made user wallets significantly more flexible: gas payment in tokens other than ETH, batched transactions, social-recovery patterns, and other UX improvements that had previously required smart-contract wallets or off-chain abstractions.
These protocol changes are not just technical milestones. They changed the asset's monetary mechanics, its scaling profile, its user experience, and the institutional case for holding it. Any rolling-return analysis from 2019 to 2026 covers an asset whose underlying economics evolved significantly during the window.
The Ethereum rolling-return record from 2019 to 2026
The INR-denominated Ethereum return record across the 2019 to 2026 window has the same broad shape as Bitcoin's, with some material differences in the cycle structure.
The cycle peaks: Ethereum reached approximately $4,360 in May 2021, then again around $4,810 in November 2021. The May 2024 ETF approval and the subsequent run produced another cycle high in late 2024, approaching prior peaks in USD terms and exceeding them in INR terms because of the FX move. The 2025 correction produced a meaningful drawdown from those highs.
The cycle troughs: Ethereum's cycle low after the November 2021 peak was approximately $880 in June 2022, a drawdown of roughly 82 percent from peak to trough. This is deeper than Bitcoin's equivalent drawdown over the same window in percentage terms, which is consistent with Ethereum's historically higher volatility. The 2022 trough was the deepest drawdown in the analysed window.
Rolling 5-year returns: across nearly all 5-year holding windows in the data set, INR-denominated Ethereum returns have been strongly positive. An investor who entered Ethereum at any reasonable point in 2019 and held through 2024 captured returns that materially exceeded INR equity index returns over the same period. The 5-year rolling-return distribution is positively skewed and concentrated above zero, though the tails of the distribution include some windows starting close to the November 2021 peak that captured most of the subsequent drawdown.
Rolling 3-year returns: similar shape, wider distribution. The 3-year window typically captures at least one major drawdown and one significant recovery for Ethereum. Most 3-year windows in the data set are positive in INR terms; some windows starting at cycle peaks show negative 3-year returns, mirroring the Bitcoin pattern.
Rolling 1-year returns: highly variable. The 1-year window does not smooth Ethereum's cycle structure at all, which means 1-year returns can be anywhere from extreme positive (entering mid-2020 and exiting mid-2021) to deeply negative (entering November 2021 and exiting November 2022). Single-year analysis of Ethereum is structurally noisy.
Comparison to Bitcoin: Ethereum's rolling returns have been more volatile than Bitcoin's, both on the upside and on the drawdown. Bitcoin and Ethereum's rolling-return distributions overlap heavily but Ethereum's is wider. An equally weighted basket of Bitcoin and Ethereum has historically produced slightly lower volatility than either standalone, due to the imperfect correlation between the two.

The tensions: what an Ethereum investor needs to know
The performance record describes the past. The forward case has tensions that deserve direct discussion.
The supply mechanism is favourable in high-activity periods but neutral or inflationary in low-activity periods. Post-Merge Ethereum is deflationary when network fees are high enough that EIP-1559 burns exceed validator issuance. In low-activity periods, the issuance is higher than the burn and the supply grows modestly. The forward supply trajectory is therefore activity-dependent, not guaranteed deflationary. An investor counting on the deflationary mechanic as a return driver should track network activity, not just price.
Layer 2 economics changed after Dencun. The cost reduction for Layer 2 transactions was significant, and it shifted activity from mainnet to rollups. From the perspective of Ethereum the asset, this is a mixed picture. More activity on rollups means more demand for Ethereum as the data-availability and settlement layer, but it also means less direct mainnet fee revenue per user. The net effect on the fee-burn mechanism depends on activity volumes, which can grow faster than the per-transaction cost falls. Tracking the actual burn rate against issuance is the empirical test of which side is winning.
Institutional adoption is real but uneven. The May 2024 spot Ethereum ETF approval in the US opened a major institutional channel, but inflows have been slower than the equivalent Bitcoin ETF inflows. The institutional case for Ethereum is more complex than Bitcoin's because the asset's role is more multi-dimensional. Some institutions hold Ethereum as a "second crypto allocation" alongside Bitcoin; others view it primarily as a programmable-platform exposure rather than a digital-asset allocation. The differing views produce slower aggregate institutional flows.
Regulatory uncertainty persists in some jurisdictions. The classification of Ethereum (as a security, a commodity, or something else) has been debated in regulatory contexts since at least 2018. The Indian framework treats Ethereum as a virtual digital asset for tax purposes under Section 115BBH, the same as Bitcoin, but the broader regulatory direction is still evolving in India and globally.
Concentration risk in the staking ecosystem is a structural feature worth tracking. A relatively small number of staking entities account for a large share of total staked Ethereum. The risk is operational rather than imminent, but it is a feature of the post-Merge architecture that did not exist in the proof-of-work era. The Pectra upgrade made some changes to validator economics that address this in part; further upgrades are likely.
Tax friction on active rebalancing is significant. The 30 percent flat rate plus 4 percent cess on gains, with no loss set-off, means that an investor who actively rebalances between Bitcoin and Ethereum (or other crypto positions) pays full tax on every realised gain with no relief from offsetting losses. The structural design favours long-hold positions over active rebalancing of crypto-to-crypto trades.
What this means for an Indian portfolio
Ethereum's portfolio case in 2026 is distinct from Bitcoin's. The two assets are correlated but not identical. An allocation to crypto that includes both, in appropriate proportions, captures more of the asset class's underlying drivers than a single-asset position.
