What is a cryptographic hash function?
A cryptographic hash function is a one-way mathematical process that turns any input into a fixed-length string that is practically impossible to reverse. The same input always produces the same output, but even a tiny change to the input produces a completely different result, which makes it useful for verifying data integrity. For example, blockchains hash each block of transactions so that any tampering becomes immediately detectable. This property is what links blocks together and underpins the security of most cryptocurrency networks.
