What is a private key and why does it matter?
A private key is a secret number that gives whoever holds it full control over the crypto stored at its associated address. It matters because it is the single piece of information that authorizes spending, so anyone who learns it can move your funds, and anyone who loses it usually loses access permanently. For example, signing a transaction requires the private key, but the network only ever sees the resulting signature, never the key itself. This is why custody and key management are treated as the core of crypto security.
