What is a staking lock-up or unbonding period?

A staking lock-up or unbonding period is the waiting time before staked tokens become transferable again after you request to unstake them. During this window the tokens are frozen, typically still at risk but no longer earning the same flexibility. For example, some proof-of-stake networks impose a 7 to 28 day unbonding period before funds return to your wallet. The delay protects network security by preventing instant exits, but it means your capital is illiquid during that span. Knowing the unbonding period helps you plan when staked tokens can actually be moved.
