What is a DeFi protocol audit and does it guarantee safety?

A DeFi protocol audit is a review of a project's smart-contract code by security specialists to find bugs, design flaws, and ways funds could be stolen or lost. It typically produces a report of issues and recommended fixes. An audit raises confidence but does not guarantee safety: it covers a snapshot of the code, can miss vulnerabilities, and says nothing about how the team behaves afterward. For example, audited protocols have still been exploited through overlooked logic or later changes. Treat an audit as one input, not a seal of protection.
