What is a real-world asset (RWA) in crypto?

A real-world asset, or RWA, in crypto is a tangible or traditional financial asset represented on a blockchain as a token. These include things like government bonds, real estate, commodities, or equities, where the on-chain token tracks ownership or value in the off-chain asset. For example, a tokenized treasury fund lets holders gain exposure to short-term government debt through a blockchain token. RWAs aim to bring established assets on-chain for easier transfer and settlement, though their value still depends on the underlying asset, its custody, and the legal structure connecting the two.
