What is decentralized identity (DID)?

Decentralized identity (DID) is an approach to digital identity where you control your own credentials directly, rather than relying on a central provider like a government portal or social login. Identity data is anchored to cryptographic keys you hold, letting you prove claims about yourself, such as age or membership, without handing a platform your full personal records. For example, you might verify you are over eighteen without revealing your birth date. The goal is privacy and portability across services, though adoption is early and standards are still settling, so practical use remains limited today.
