What is the metaverse?

The metaverse is a broad term for persistent, shared virtual environments where people interact, work, play, and sometimes own digital assets through avatars. It spans gaming worlds, virtual social spaces, and immersive 3D experiences, and in its Web3 form it often connects to blockchains so that items like land, wearables, or art are owned as tokens that move across platforms. For example, a user might buy a virtual plot as an NFT and build on it. The concept is still developing, with no single metaverse and varying degrees of true ownership or interoperability today.
