A reserve is a role, not a leftover

The buffer only becomes useful when it has been deliberately sized and governed before it is needed.

The point

Protection works best when it is designed before the moment that tests it.

A reserve is easy to describe and hard to use well. If it is simply whatever remains after the exciting exposures are selected, it has no clear responsibility inside the portfolio.

A governed reserve starts with a reason. It may soften volatility, preserve optionality, or create a schedule for adding exposure after a drawdown. The role determines the size and the rules.

This is why risk posture belongs in the methodology, not in a footnote. Investors should be able to see what protection means in practice and what it deliberately does not promise.

“A better allocation begins with a better explanation.”
