What is elliptic curve cryptography in blockchain?
Elliptic curve cryptography, or ECC, is a form of public-key cryptography built on the mathematics of points on an elliptic curve, used in blockchain to generate the key pairs that secure wallets and sign transactions. Its appeal is efficiency: it provides the same security as older systems like RSA while using much shorter keys, which keeps signatures and addresses compact. For example, your blockchain private key is a number, and the matching public key is derived by curve multiplication that is easy to compute forward but practically impossible to reverse. This one-way property is what protects your funds.
