What is key derivation in a crypto wallet?

Key derivation in a crypto wallet is the process of generating many private keys from a single starting secret, usually a seed phrase, using a defined mathematical path. A hierarchical deterministic wallet takes your seed and derives a tree of keys, so one backup can restore every address you have ever used. This means you protect one seed phrase rather than dozens of separate keys. For example, the standards behind most modern wallets let you produce a fresh address for each transaction while still recovering all of them from the same twelve or twenty-four words. Guard that seed carefully.
