What is the ERC-721 NFT standard?

ERC-721 is the Ethereum token standard that defines how non-fungible tokens, or NFTs, behave on the network. Each ERC-721 token carries a unique identifier, so no two are interchangeable, which is what makes them suitable for representing distinct items like digital art or collectibles. The standard specifies common functions, such as transferring ownership and querying who owns a given token, so wallets and marketplaces can support any compliant NFT. For example, two NFTs in the same collection share a contract but hold different token IDs. It is a technical specification.
