What is the difference between circulating supply and total supply?

Circulating supply is the number of coins currently available and tradable in the market, while total supply is the number that has been created minus any that have been verifiably destroyed. The gap between them usually reflects coins that are locked, reserved, or not yet released. For example, a project may have a total supply of 100 million tokens but a circulating supply of 60 million if the rest are vested or held back. Both figures help in understanding how a token's availability may change over time.
