Bitcoin SIP in India: what a weekly buy actually does

A Bitcoin SIP buys a fixed rupee amount on a fixed day. What that does to your average cost, what it cannot do, and how to size it before you start.

The point

A Bitcoin SIP buys a fixed rupee amount of Bitcoin on a fixed day, so ₹6,250 every week becomes four purchases a month at four different prices. That spreads your entry across the month. Bitcoin stays as volatile as it was, and the rupees already invested still move with every fall.

What does a Bitcoin SIP actually do?

A Bitcoin SIP is a standing instruction. You choose an amount, a frequency and the asset, and the platform buys on schedule from your rupee balance. On Qatobit the frequency is weekly, biweekly or monthly. A SIP into a single coin is named for the coin: a Bitcoin SIP, an Ethereum SIP or a Solana SIP.

The one thing it changes is who decides when to buy. The calendar decides. You are no longer asking whether today is a good price, because the answer no longer changes what happens.

The common pitch says a SIP "beats volatility". Volatility is the price moving, and a SIP leaves the price exactly as volatile as it was. What a SIP spreads is your entry.

Why does a fixed-amount buy lower your average cost?

A fixed rupee amount buys more Bitcoin when the price is low and less when the price is high. Your average cost per coin therefore lands below the plain average of the prices, because the cheap weeks carried more coins.

Here is a hypothetical month, with made-up prices to show the mechanism. You invest ₹25,000 as four weekly buys of ₹6,250. Bitcoin is priced at ₹70,00,000, then ₹60,00,000, then ₹65,00,000, then ₹75,00,000.

  • Week one buys 6,250 ÷ 70,00,000 = 0.000893 Bitcoin.
  • Week two buys 6,250 ÷ 60,00,000 = 0.001042 Bitcoin.
  • Week three buys 6,250 ÷ 65,00,000 = 0.000962 Bitcoin.
  • Week four buys 6,250 ÷ 75,00,000 = 0.000833 Bitcoin.

The four buys add up to 0.003729 Bitcoin for ₹25,000, an average cost of about ₹67,03,500 a coin. The plain average of the four prices is ₹67,50,000. The gap exists because week two, the cheapest week, bought the most coins.

This example ignores fees and uses invented prices. It shows how the arithmetic works and says nothing about where Bitcoin will go.

Where does a SIP lose to a single buy?

Whenever the price rises through the whole period, the first buy is the cheapest, and every later buy pays more. A lump sum made on day one would have owned more.

Run the same ₹25,000 with prices of ₹60,00,000, ₹65,00,000, ₹70,00,000 and ₹75,00,000. The four weekly buys give 0.001042 + 0.000962 + 0.000893 + 0.000833 = 0.003730 Bitcoin. Putting all ₹25,000 in on day one at ₹60,00,000 gives 25,000 ÷ 60,00,000 = 0.004167 Bitcoin, which is about 12 percent more.

Flip the path and the SIP wins. If prices fall every week, the lump sum bought everything at the top. Nobody knows in advance which of the two paths is coming, and that is the whole reason a schedule exists. A SIP takes the bet on the path off the table, and earns nothing extra for doing so.

Our piece on SIP versus lump sum goes through the same trade from the side of nerve instead of arithmetic.

What did a hot inflation print do to a recurring buy?

CoinDesk reported on 14 October 2026 that the US September Consumer Price Index rose 0.6 percent, with the yearly rate at 3.7 percent against 3.4 percent in August. Bitcoin dropped about $1,000 on the news to $82,800, and the 10-year Treasury yield jumped 9.3 basis points to 5.308 percent.

A basis point is one hundredth of a percentage point, so 9.3 basis points is 0.093 percentage points. The source is CoinDesk, and the figures are as of that report.

A holder with a SIP running took no decision that morning. The weekly buy went through on its own date at whatever the price was. A holder without one spent the morning on the question a SIP is built to retire: buy the dip, or wait for the next print?

Neither answer is known in advance. The SIP removes the morning of deciding, and the second guess that follows it.

What should you decide before you start a Bitcoin SIP?

Three choices carry the whole plan. Settle them before the first buy.

Cadence

Weekly gives you more, smaller entries, which smooths the average more finely. Monthly gives fewer entries and a lighter calendar. For a ₹25,000 monthly budget, the choice is four buys of ₹6,250 or one of ₹25,000. The first smooths one month into four prices. The second takes one price a month and averages across twelve of them.

Neither is better in every market. Choose the one you will not interrupt.

Size

Size the instalment against your worst month of cash flow. If your monthly surplus runs from ₹30,000 to ₹80,000, a ₹25,000 plan fits inside the weakest month with ₹5,000 to spare. A ₹55,000 plan fits only the average month, and the SIP is the first thing cut in a lean one.

We worked this through with real stoppage data in the SIP stoppage ratio piece. Its argument is that plans end when the amount was set for a good month.

What stops it

Write down the one condition that would make you pause or end the plan. A change in your income is a reason. A price fall is not, because the price fall is the situation the schedule was built for. Deciding this in advance means you do not decide it on a bad morning.

How is a Bitcoin SIP taxed?

The tax follows the statute on virtual digital assets, whatever the wrapper. The statutory facts are these.

Income from transferring a virtual digital asset is taxed at 30 percent under section 115BBH of the Income Tax Act, 1961. The only deduction allowed is the cost of acquisition, and a loss on one virtual digital asset cannot be set off against any other income. Section 194S adds a 1 percent tax deducted at source on payments for the transfer, above a monetary threshold.

For a SIP, each instalment is a separate purchase at a separate price, which is the cost of acquisition for those coins. Your accountant should confirm how to apply that to your own return. The source is the TaxGuru summary of the scheme for taxation of virtual digital assets, read for this piece.

When does a single-coin SIP fit, and when does an index SIP?

A Bitcoin SIP gives you Bitcoin and nothing else. If your portfolio view is that Bitcoin should be a defined sleeve, the single-coin SIP is the cleanest way to run it. An Ethereum SIP and a Solana SIP work the same way for those assets.

Qatobit's SIP page puts the limit directly: a recurring buy into one coin is still a bet on one coin, run on autopilot. A SIP spreads your timing. An index spreads the position.

A SIP into a QSI index spreads every cycle across the whole basket, on a published methodology that rebalances monthly. QSI Core holds Bitcoin, Ethereum, Gold and a stable reserve. QSI Growth adds Solana. QSI VRION holds Bitcoin, Ethereum and Solana with no hedge. QSI GEQ8 holds eight global equities and no crypto.

Each fits a different thesis. Hold Bitcoin on a schedule if Bitcoin is the position you mean to own. Choose an index if the position you mean to own is the basket. Our comparison of single-coin SIPs and an index SIP sets out the differences in construction.

The view this piece argues

A Bitcoin SIP is a rule about cadence and size. Its value is the decision it takes away, and that is also its limit. It spreads your entry across several prices, lets the cheap weeks buy more, and keeps working on the days you would rather not look. The asset carries the same risk as before, and a single buy can still come out ahead.

If you already run equity SIPs, you already know the habit. A Bitcoin SIP is the same habit on a more volatile asset, so the size is the part to be conservative about. When you are ready, invest through a Bitcoin SIP on Qatobit, and set the amount for your worst month.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Bitcoin SIP in India?

A Bitcoin SIP is a recurring purchase of Bitcoin for a fixed rupee amount on a schedule you choose. On Qatobit you set the amount, pick weekly, biweekly or monthly, and the platform buys from your rupee balance on each date.

Does a Bitcoin SIP protect me from a price fall?

No. A SIP spreads your entry across several prices, so no single purchase decides your average cost. The rupees already invested still move with the Bitcoin price, and market risk remains.

What is the minimum for a Bitcoin SIP?

Crypto SIP starts at ₹500 per cadence for weekly or biweekly and ₹2,000 per cadence for monthly. Crypto SIP into a Crypto Index starts at ₹2,000 per cadence.

Is a weekly or a monthly SIP better?

Neither wins in every market. A weekly SIP takes more entries and smooths the average more finely, and a monthly SIP is a lighter calendar. Pick the cadence you will not interrupt.

How is a Bitcoin SIP taxed in India?

Income from the transfer of a virtual digital asset is taxed at 30 percent under section 115BBH. Losses cannot be set off, and the cost of acquisition is the only deduction allowed.
