The point
Crypto trades 24 hours a day, seven days a week in India, with no closing bell and no exchange holiday. The Indian equity market is open 9:15 AM to 3:30 PM IST on weekdays, which is 31 hours 15 minutes of a 168-hour week. What changes through the week is liquidity, the amount of size waiting to be matched, and it is thinnest on Saturday and Sunday.
What are the crypto market timings in India?
There are none in the sense an equity investor means. Crypto exchanges trade around the clock, Christmas Eve included (CryptoTicker, read 25 October 2026). A buy placed at 3 AM on a Sunday meets the same market as one placed at noon on a Tuesday.
The Indian equity market works differently. The normal session on NSE and BSE runs 9:15 AM to 3:30 PM IST, Monday to Friday. A pre-open window runs from 9:00 AM to 9:15 AM. The market stays shut on weekends and on declared exchange holidays (Rupeezy, read 25 October 2026).
The arithmetic shows how different the two clocks are. An equity week holds 5 sessions of 6 hours 15 minutes, which is 31.25 hours. A week has 7 times 24, or 168 hours, so the equity market is open for 31.25 divided by 168, about 18.6 percent of it. Crypto is open for all of it.
Why does a market that never closes still feel like it has a schedule?
Because the people who supply size do keep a schedule. Exchanges stay open, but the firms and funds that quote large prices mostly work business hours.
Kaiko data, as quoted by Bitsgap (read 25 October 2026), puts the weekend share of bitcoin volume at about 25 percent in 2018 to 2021. In 2024 it was 13 percent. Weekday volume now runs at roughly double the weekend level. The same piece ties the shift to spot bitcoin ETFs, market makers and trading desks, which work business hours.
An ETF is a fund whose shares trade on a stock exchange. A spot bitcoin ETF can create or redeem shares, and buy or sell bitcoin to match, only while its exchange is open. When New York closes on Friday evening, that route stays closed until Monday (CryptoTicker, read 25 October 2026).
Market makers are the firms that post the buy and sell quotes that keep the gap between them narrow. CryptoTicker reports that they run their positions down over the weekend because they cannot hedge against futures while the derivatives exchange is closed. Fewer quotes means a thinner order book.
How thin does the weekend get?
The market does not close at the weekend, but its depth falls. CryptoTicker measured it on Kraken's bitcoin against US dollar pair, using 84 daily candles from 28 July to 19 October 2026.
On Friday 16 October 2026, turnover was 2,089 bitcoin across 144,685 trades. On Saturday 17 October it was 599 bitcoin across 71,492 trades. On Sunday 18 October it was 987 bitcoin across 107,516 trades. The two weekend days together turned over 1,586 bitcoin, less than Friday did alone.
Across the whole 84 days, the median weekend day turned over 912 bitcoin against 2,559 on a weekday, which is 35.6 percent. The median daily price range was 1.24 percent at the weekend against 2.61 percent on weekdays, which is 47.4 percent.
Turnover falls to 35.6 percent of the weekday level while the price range falls only to 47.4 percent. Dividing the two, 47.4 by 35.6 is about 1.33. Each unit of weekend turnover is attached to about a third more price movement than a weekday unit. That is a ratio of medians from one exchange pair, so it describes a tendency, and any single day can run differently.
What a thin book does to an order
An order that arrives in a thin book works further up the list of sellers before it is filled. Slippage is the gap between the price you saw and the price you got. The spread is the gap between the best buy quote and the best sell quote.
CryptoTicker gives the shape of it. If ten bitcoin sit within $50 of the price on a Tuesday midday, one bitcoin costs barely any premium. If only three sit in that range on a Sunday evening, the same order reaches deeper. The source adds that for a position of a few hundred euros this stays a rounding error, and for a four-figure sum in one go it is measurable.
What a thin book does to a move
Thin books also let a move travel further before buyers arrive. Bitsgap describes a weekend of Middle East escalation in March 2026. The cost of trading BTC-USDT on Bybit rose 230 percent above normal, with similar jumps on OKX and Binance. The news caused the move and could have landed on any day. The weekend decided how far the price travelled before buyers showed up.
Is there a best hour to buy crypto in India?
There is a deeper hour, and the data supports it only weakly. In CryptoTicker's 84 days, Tuesday to Thursday sat consistently above the weekday median of 2,559 bitcoin. The same article says a year of twelve monthly purchases largely averages the difference out, and that the difference is measured in basis points. A basis point is one hundredth of a percentage point.
My position is that hunting for the right hour is the wrong job for an investor with a portfolio. A 24-hour market gives you 168 hours a week to second-guess a decision, and a screen is open for every one of them. A rule written in advance takes the hour out of the decision. When a weekend selloff arrives while Dalal Street is shut, the useful question is what your schedule was already set to do.
What does a schedule do that a screen cannot?
A schedule removes the single date. Take a monthly allocation of ₹25,000 to a position.
Put in on one date, the whole ₹25,000 meets whatever the book looks like that day. Split into four weekly instalments, it is 25,000 divided by 4, or ₹6,250 a week. Each instalment meets a different day's book, and no one day carries the whole amount.
Neither version predicts a price. The split only means that no single hour holds the entire month's allocation. Crypto SIP at Qatobit works this way. The investor sets an amount, a cadence of weekly, biweekly or monthly, and an asset or index. The platform invests on that schedule from the INR balance. It smooths timing risk through cadence-based averaging, and market risk remains.
The same logic runs one level up inside a QSI index. Each of the four QSI indices rebalances monthly on a published methodology, so the rule sets the rebalance date before any weekend arrives. A rebalance trims or tops up inside the basket on the schedule, and the investor holds the basket, not the coins.
For a family office or an investor with a sleeve of crypto inside a larger portfolio, the practical change comes down to two settings. Set the cadence once, and size the position once as a share of the portfolio. The calendar then does the waiting.
How a crypto SIP works walks through the mechanics of a schedule. What a weekly Bitcoin buy actually does shows the weekly case.
A market holiday stops the price, not the news covers the equity side, a closed exchange and a position you already hold. The rules behind each basket are on the QSI index methodology pages. Once the cadence is set, you can invest in QSI Growth or start a Bitcoin SIP.
Frequently asked questions
What are the crypto market timings in India?
Crypto trades 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with no closing bell and no exchange holiday. The Indian equity market runs 9:15 AM to 3:30 PM IST, Monday to Friday, which is about 18.6 percent of the 168 hours in a week.
Is the crypto market open on Saturday and Sunday?
Yes. Crypto exchanges stay open at the weekend, but turnover is lower. In CryptoTicker's 84-day sample, the median weekend day turned over 912 bitcoin against 2,559 on a weekday, or 35.6 percent.
Why is there less volume on weekends if the market never closes?
The firms that quote large size mostly work business hours. Spot bitcoin ETFs can only create or redeem shares while their exchange is open, and market makers run positions down when the derivatives exchange is shut.
Is there a best time to buy crypto in India?
Liquidity is deeper on weekdays, and in one 84-day Kraken sample Tuesday to Thursday sat above the weekday median. The same source says the difference across twelve monthly purchases largely averages out and is measured in basis points. A fixed schedule removes the need to pick an hour.
Can I invest in crypto on a fixed schedule in India?
Qatobit's Crypto SIP invests on the cadence the investor sets, weekly, biweekly or monthly, and the QSI indices rebalance monthly on a published methodology. The schedule is the investor's choice, and market risk remains.
Crypto investments are subject to market risk. Not financial advice.
